Class Options for Winter 2015 Women’s Bible Studies

Northview WomenRegistration is up for Monday Evening & Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Studies – Winter 2015!

The Winter semester of our Women’s Bible Studies follow a class format. Read descriptions of the classes offered below:

Monday Evening Bible Study:

A Bible Study on Ruth & Esther
Taught by Kristal Toews, Carol Duskin & Lezlie Allison
January 12 – March 8
Cost: $20
Everyone likes a good story. When someone says “Once upon a time,” we smile and settle in. The “God-breathed” Old Testament is full of real-life stories: taken together, they point us to Jesus, God’s son. In January we will crack the cover on the stories of Ruth and Esther.
We pause, now, for a moment of honest skepticism: “A study of Ruth and Esther? Oh yes, the ladies’ books of the Bible. Women’s ministry—ladies’ books…. Uh-huh. …And I’ve read them about a bajillion times.” Help/encouragement for closet skeptics: Even if you’ve read or studied Ruth and Esther before, read them again! Read them in light of everything you’ve just learned about God’s big-picture plan from Genesis to Revelation. See them in their “covenant” setting—it’s fascinating.
So, grab your Bible, your study guide and sit down with anticipation of how God will speak to your mind and heart through the stories of Ruth and Esther. They’re HIS stories. Stories of “promises kept.” Stories that really happened. The best kind of stories!

Simeon Course in Biblical Exposition
Video Course & in Class Discussion – Facilitated by Laurie Husband
January 12 – End of May (exact dates will depend on adjustments made for Family Day, Easter Monday & Spring Break)
Cost: $79
Preaching and Literary Genre (20 weeks)
The Bible is one book. Yet, it is also a collection of writings written at different times, and in different literary genres. Each of the genres found in the Bible requires unique reading strategies for both understanding and teaching from within that genre. We don’t read a newspaper article the same way we read a novel. So why would we read and teach the prophetic book of Isaiah in the same way as the Gospel of Mark? In other words, we should employ different techniques when teaching from different parts of the Bible. But this is not always easy to do. Nor is it easy to know how to do it. In this course we focus on how to understand and teach the Biblical genres of Old Testament Narrative, Epistles, Wisdom Literature, Prophetic Literature, Apocalyptic Literature, and Gospels & Acts.

Prior to attending class each week, participants are required to watch a 35-45 minute video, answer questions on the video’s content, and apply the information learned to a specific passage of scripture (approximately 2-3 hours of prep per week). Class time will consist of discussing the video and biblical materials.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study:

Classes for Wednesday Morning Bible study fall under the categories of Theology, Life & Culture.

Life: “I have a friend Who…”
Taught by Thaleia Sawatzky

What do we do when we have friends or family members dealing with difficult issues? Or what if those “friends” are really us?

The topics will include: God’s Design for Sexuality, Separation and Divorce, Abuse, Mental Health, Homosexuality and Same-sex Attraction, Grief and Loss, Pornography and other Addictions. In each class we will look at the cultural view, the Biblical view, and we will discuss a variety of practical life application questions for each topic. I will also refer class participants to a variety of resources for each topic (books, articles, websites) and we will spend time in prayer for our “friends” at the end of every class.
